Rewind to the year 2020. Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath lets his car enthusiasm run free and pictures a special version of Polestar 2, pushing the envelope of electric performance. More than happy to turn his idea into reality, designers and engineers create a one-off experimental car, nicknamed “The Beast”, using carefully selected parts to enhance handling and power delivery. With its bigger wheels, colour-matched bodywork and lower stance, the car makes quite an impression. Especially in the Gothenburg area, where Thomas Ingenlath uses The Beast as a daily driver.

Held on the stately grounds of Goodwood Estate in Chichester, England, the Goodwood Festival of Speed is known as the world’s greatest celebration of motorsport and car culture. Besides being a Polestar favourite, it’s also the perfect event to showcase what the brand is capable of. “For the 2021 edition”, explains Thomas Ingenlath, “I challenged the design and engineering teams to play with Polestar 2 and come up with something that makes a strong statement”. Enter the Experimental Polestar 2, inspired by The Beast and producing a combined 350 kW (476 hp) output from its twin electric motors.

Piloted by Polestar Chief Chassis Engineer Joakim Rydholm, the car's capabilities were demonstrated, competing against the clock on Goodwood’s famous 1.1 mile hill climb track. Featuring Akebono brakes, custom Öhlins 3-way adjustable dampers, stiffened springs, front- and rear strut bars and a 30 mm lower ride height, it engaged the crowds with its responsiveness and tight handling. Add the updated bumpers and side skirts, widened wheel arches, impressive 9x21-inch Polestar 1 wheels and 275/30R21 Pirelli P-Zero Rosso tyres, and it becomes even more evident why the Experimental was one of the most popular cars in Goodwood’s First Glance Paddock.

To say that the Experimental’s appearance at Goodwood evoked a positive response would be an understatement. So, the decision was made to develop a limited edition production version, scaling up the number of cars while staying close to the one-off original. Many months of obsessive tuning followed, collaborating with the suspension specialists at Öhlins and tyre technicians at Pirelli to perfect the handling characteristics. The result is the aptly named Polestar 2 BST edition 270. Honouring the car that started it all by bringing track-inspired electric performance to 270 drivers who aspire to own a part of automotive history.
