Polestar 2 performance software upgrade
Sorry, gearheads. We know how much fun it can be to pop the hood and make some modifications to upgrade a car’s performance. We’ve even indulged in a bit of wrenching ourselves from time to time. But with the performance software upgrade for Polestar 2, the days of tool-free tweaks have arrived.
Available as an OTA update for the Long range Dual motor version of Polestar 2, the performance software upgrade optimises the all-electric fastback in more ways than one. It boosts power during acceleration between 70 and 130 km/h. It reduces 0 to 100 km/h time to a zippy 4.4 seconds. It boosts the electrical power output of the battery, meaning higher power output from the electric motors. This takes torque from an already potent 660 Nm to 680 Nm, and power from 300 kW to 350 kW. And in keeping with our sustainability mandate, it doesn’t affect Polestar 2’s energy consumption. It also comes with stickers: one for the door to reflect the new power rating information, and one for the grid in the form of a rank mark.
That’s what the performance software upgrade will do. What it won’t do is impact the warranty, or the frequency at which it needs to be serviced.
The performance software upgrade heralds a change in the way OTA updates can be utilised. Familiar to all who own a smart device, these updates generally deliver the latest version of an operating system, with some small optimisations and bug fixes to improve upon earlier versions. And a lot of Polestar’s own OTA updates adhere to this format.
But some, like this one, can change the entire performance profile of the car. And in doing so, unlock new levels of driver experience without ever having to get one’s hands dirty.
So, apologies to all the gearheads. It’s always possible to adjust the dampers.
