Beyond the Road: Sergio Marques

The frozen lakes of Northern Sweden may seem a world away from the sun-drenched vineyards of Portugal, but for Sergio Marques, home is wherever his Polestar takes him. And for one weekend in late February, that home was Jokkmokk—reindeer and Northern Lights territory.

The food, the ambience, the cars—it has been amazing

Jokkmokk means different things to different people. For some, it’s the land of wild, roaming reindeer, subzero ice plunges, and skies that glow green and purple. For others, it’s a frozen playground of high-speed ice-track thrills. For Sergio Marques, the tiny Swedish town just north of the Arctic Circle is all of the above.

"The food, the ambience, the cars—it has been amazing," says the Polestar 4 and Commercial Director at one of Portugal’s leaving wine produceros. "Coming from a country where it’s usually sunny, with no ice and slower driving, this is quite special. But I’m enjoying it a lot. I feel like a champion. It’s amazing, and I’m so happy."

But this isn't a new story. Sergio’s love affair with Polestar started long before he set foot in the Arctic Circle. "I fell in love with the brand about two or three years ago when Polestar arrived in Portugal. I took my first test drive in May 2022 with the Polestar 2 and thought, ‘One day, I’m going to own one.’ When the Polestar 4 launched in 2024, I went for it."

Having owned his Polestar 4 for just over two months, Sergio admits the car is already exceeding expectations. He knew the SUV-coupe looked the part, but wasn’t prepared for how thrilling it would be to drive. "It’s an incredible car with a fantastic Swedish design. Polestar is a car made for people who love driving. I’m in love with it. I drive 100 kilometers every day back and forth from work, and now, everyone at my company loves Polestar."

Polestar is a car made for people who love driving. I’m in love with it.

The daily commute through winding Portuguese country roads is one thing, but ice-track racing under the expert guidance of professional racing drivers is something entirely different. So, how did he adapt to the testing conditions? "This is not something many Portuguese people get to experience!" he laughs. "There are three of us at this event, and I have to admit, I’m a lousy driver. But the event is fantastic. After this course, I’ll definitely be better."

Soon, he’ll return to the rolling vineyards of Portugal, but the lessons from Jokkmokk will stay with him. "We don’t have this kind of weather back home, but the driving techniques I’ve learned will make me feel safer. Plus, I’ll be back next year with my son, Thiago."

And would he recommend the Polestar Jokkmokk experience to others back home? Silly question. "If you love cars, if you love meeting passionate people from around the world, if you love Polestar, this is for you. Thank you, Polestar."
